Sony has been focusing only on Android for the last few years, but hasn’t really seen much of success but it sees a big chunk of smartphone market in emerging countries and wants to tap that using Firefox OS phones.
The joining of Sony makes it a total of five companies currently working or planning to work on Firefox OS smartphones – Alcatel, ZTE, Huawei, LG and Sony.
Mozilla has also revealed that it has partnered with the following telecom operators to release Firefox OS smartphones on their networks:
América Móvil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefónica, Telenor, TMN and VimpelCom
The first Firefox OS phone will go on sale in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela in mid-2013.
