Android expected to grow 200% in Australia this year

We all know that 2011 is going to be the year of Android, and almost every region will be seeing exceptional Android growth. In the same series, Australian Telecommunication Analyst firm Telsyte today put a number of this growth in Australia.

According to a statement today, Telsyte said that Android is expected to grow three fold in the country. It also said that the faster growing area will the low-cost prepaid Android smartphones.

“Android is growing as a distributive force against Apple. The quality of the platform is improving and gaining significant traction in the developer community”, Telsyte Research Director Foad Fadaghi says.

The Telsyte smartphone report estimates 54% of mobile phones shipped in 2010 were smartphones. This equates to 4.8 million units, and a year on year growth rate of 65%. Telsyte estimates that 6.8 million smartphone units will ship in 2011, growing to 8.7 million by 2014.
