ZTE announces Grand S3 with Eyeprint ID biometric security

While most smartphone makers are still struggling with fingerprint sensors, Chinese smartphone maker ZTE has decided to move on the eye-based biometric security solution. The company has introduced its new flagship Grand S3 at the ongoing Mobile World Congress, which includes Eyeprint ID feature. It allows users to unlock their smartphone by scanning their retina. For Eyeprint ID, ZTE is using technology from EyeVerify.

Coupled with EyeVerify’s leading solution, the ZTE Grand S3 represents an unbeatable option for smartphone privacy,” said Adam ZENG Xuezhong, Executive Vice President of ZTE Corporation and CEO of ZTE Mobile Devices.

According to ZTE, Eyeprint ID works by imaging unique vein patterns in the eye using the front camera of the phone.

Among other specifications, the phone features a 5.5-inch full HD display, 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM and Android 4.4. The phone also packs 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, 3100 mAh battery and 4G LTE support.

In addition, ZTE has included 16MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, 8MP front shooter and the usual set of connectivity options in the phone.

ZTE Grand S3 is already on sale in China or 2999 yuan ($478). There is no word on the international release right now.
