Google shuts down Explorer program to focus on next-gen Google Glass

Google has announced that it is shutting down the Glass Explorer program and the device has graduated from being a Google X labs product. Google Glass will now have its own team, which will be overseen by Nest’s Tony Fadell. Existing Glass head Ivy Ross will still be the in-charge, but will now report to Fadell.

“Since we first met, interest in wearables has exploded and today it’s one of the most exciting areas in technology. As we look to the road ahead, we realize that we’ve outgrown the lab and so we’re officially “graduating” from Google[x] to be our own team here at Google. We’re thrilled to be moving even more from concept to reality,” Glass team wrote on Google+.

According to Google, January 19 will be the last day to purchase the Glass Explorer edition. The company will now work on the next-generation of Glass, but no details are available at this point.
