As expected, Xiaomi earlier today introduced its new Redmi 2 smartphone in the Chinese market. The phone is a successor to the company’s Redmi/Redmi 1S smartphones and will be available in China beginning January 9. Registrations start today at QQ Space for 699 yuan ($113).

The new smartphone features a 4.7-inch 1280x720p HD display, 1GB of RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, and Android 4.4-based MIUI 6.0. The phone also packs 8GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, dual-SIM support, and 2200 mAh battery. In addition, Xiaomi has included 4G LTE, 8MP f2.2 rear camera with BSI sensor, and 2MP front shooter in the Redmi 2 smartphone.

As you can see Xiaomi hasn’t changed much from Redmi and Redmi 1S and the Redmi 2 just includes a new processor, 4G LTE support, slightly bigger battery and higher-resolution front camera. The pricing and other specifications are almost the same.

Xiaomi has not revealed the global roll-out plans just yet, but we hope to see the phone in select Asian markets around March this year. The Xiaomi Redmi 2 will be available in White, Dark gray, Bright Yellow, Light Green and Pink colour options.

So this is the first time that Xiaomi has underwhelmed me with it’s specs. The pricing is stellar as usual, but the storage needed to at least twice as much (would have cost ’em peanuts) and the screen size needed to have been 0.3″ larger IMO.

Having said that though, it’s still pretty decent for $113 (6999 in India maybe?)
