Former Android boss Andy Rubin leaves Google

Android co-founder Andy Rubin, who was leading Google’s robotics efforts until recently, is leaving the search giant to form an incubator for start-ups working on technology-hardware products.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, James Kuffner, who is a research scientist and part of Google’s robotics efforts, will be taking over Rubin’s responsibilities.

Andy Rubin had joined Google in 2005 after the search giant acquired his firm Android Inc. Rubin then worked at Google to take Android to what it is today. In 2013, he had stepped down from his role as the head of Android and joined Google’s robotics group. Google executive Sundar Pichai has since been looking after Android and he was recently promoted to head most of Google’s consumers and enterprise-facing products.

“I want to wish Andy all the best with what’s next. With Android he created something truly remarkable— with a billion-plus happy users. Thank you,” said Google CEO Larry Page in a statement.

The exact reason behind Rubin’s departure from Google is unclear but we wish him all the best for the future endeavors.
