Update: HTC will update Desire to Android 2.3 – Report Here.
It might come as a shock for many of you, but it is indeed true. HTC today posted on the UK Facebook page that they have been trying to bring Gingerbread on Desire with HTC Sense, but it seems low memory became an issue. HTC was not able to resolve it anyhow, so they have decided to dump Desire owners.
HTC Statement:
Our engineering teams have been working hard for the past few months to find a way to bring Gingerbread to the HTC Desire without compromising the HTC Sense experience you’ve come to expect from our phones. However, we’re sorry to announce that we’ve been forced to accept there isn’t enough memory to allow us both to bring Gingerbread and keep the HTC Sense experience on the HTC Desire.
Even after HTC’s decision, there are lots of ways to bring Gingerbread to your beloved phone. You can root your phone and install any custom ROM with Gingerbread as the phone and most prominent of them is CyanogenMOD.
I am still hoping that HTC comes to its senses and somehow brings Android 2.3 to Desire – by even dumping their beloved UI for stock Gingerbread.

Hey HTC, how about you bag your bloated sense experience and give the users a vanilla Android upgrade so they can have a secure working device?
Yet another reason I won’t purchase devices with bloated UI overlays.

Chances of HTC dumping Sense experience are slim.. especially considering that its far better than any UI customization by any other vendor. This might come as a rude shock to those who bought their Desire at discounted prices from Saholic.com. As HTC mentioned earlier, Sense 3.0 is the way to go for any next release and since it wouldn’t be supported for HTC Desire, chances of GB update coming to other contemporary HTC phones might be bleak. CM support is all they can look forward to now.
HTC Wildfire S has 600MHz CPU, 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM and comes with gingerbread.
HTC Desire has 1GHz CPU 576MB RAM and 512MB ROM can’t be upgraded to gingerbread??

HTC and Samsung were only two manufactures who provided consistent OS to their users…This is really sad
Guys….. HTC has taken back their words…now HTC desire will eb upgradable to 2.3 gingerbread….this is confirmed news… so the ones who have Desire…just relax, upgrade and enjoy!!!!!!
