Google is planning to launch a platform for digitized version of magazine, newspapers, and other news publications for Android devices. The initiative is currently in very nascent stage, and may be terminated, according to people familiar with the matter, reported WSJ.
This e-newsstand would include applications from media companies offering versions of their publications for Android devices. But considering the fragmentation problems within Android OS, Google will be needed to launch it in part to provide a more consistent experience for consumers who want to read periodicals on Android devices.
According to Google, “We’ve consistently said we’re talking with publishers about ways we can work together, including whether we can help them with technology for subscription services. We have nothing specific to announce at this time.”
Currently all the major media houses have their Android apps, but they face tablet optimisation and device fragmentation problems.
