Broadcom is planning to launch a new dual core processor for Android smartphones. BCM 2157, a low cost dual core ARM processor running 500 Mhz is already being shipped to a few ‘early access customers.” The first batch of Android phones running on the processor is expected to hit the markets by February next year.

Smartphones running on BCM 2157 can come with the following features:

–           Integrated Wi-Fi hotspots

–          Multi-touch screens

–          5 MP camera

–          High-Speed Downlink Packet Access at 7.2Mbps

The availability of low cost smart phones have already made Android popular among mobile users. The launch of the low cost BCM 2157 is expected to bring down the prices further and boost the sales of Android phones.
