According to the latest report from Canalys, Android has reached the number ‘2’ spot globally in mobile phone operating systems in the recently completed third quarter.

Symbian still is reigning at number one spot with 37% market share, while Android has 17% share.

Quotes from Canalys:

“Android offered free to cellphone vendors, has experienced dramatic growth since coming to market two years ago. Last quarter it saw a 14-fold growth from very low levels a year ago.”

“We are seeing more volume going into the mid- and lower-tier. We have reached a tipping point, smartphones are no longer the high-tier product,” said analyst Pete Cunningham.
