Apple Music is official, Android app coming this autumn

Apple MusicAs expected, Apple on Monday unveiled its brand new music-streaming service “Apple Music” at WWDC 2015. The service will go live for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and PC on June 30 in 100 countries, and in a first, it is also coming to Android. According to Apple, the Apple Music app will be available to Android users this autumn (fall, Sept-Nov).

Apple Music combines on-demand music streaming, a 24-hour radio station called Beats 1, and Connect platform. Read on for details.

Music streaming

Apple will be offering a catalogue of over 30 million tracks for on-demand streaming. You will be able stream any song, album or playlist you choose. There will be curated playlists and automatic personalisation as well. The ‘For You’ section will provide a mix of albums, new releases and playlists, which have been personalized for you.

The company has also stated that the consumers will also be able cache music for offline listening.

Music radio

Like radio? Apple is introducing Beats 1 with Apple Music, which is global live radio station broadcasting 24×7 from studios in Los Angeles, New York and London. All users will experience the same programming across the globe.

In addition to Beats 1, there will be several curated radio stations, which range in genres from indie rock to classical and folk to funk.

Connect

The company is also providing a platform in the form of Connect to the Apple Music users and artists to engage with each other. Apple Music Connect will allow artists to share lyrics, backstage photos, videos or even release their latest song directly to the fans. The fans will be able to comment or like the artist posts.

“We love music, and the new Apple Music service puts an incredible experience at every fan’s fingertips. All the ways people love enjoying music come together in one app — a revolutionary streaming service, live worldwide radio and an exciting way for fans to connect with artists,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

Apart from Siri integration, the Apple Music offering is expected to be identical on all platforms.

What much does Apple Music cost?

Apple Music will cost $9.99 a month and come with a family plan as well (up to six family members) for $14.99 a month. In addition, new users get three months’ subscription free.

What about India availability?

Apple hasn’t explicitly stated anything about India availability of the Apple Music, but considering that it is arriving in 100 countries simultaneously, we are hopeful that India will be a part of the first batch of launch markets.
