As Lollipop reaches almost 10pc devices, KitKat loses market share for first time

Android platform distributions numbers for May 2015Since February this year, when Lollipop made its first appearance in Google’s Android platform distribution numbers, both KitKat and Lollipop Android versions had been maintaining steady growth. But, it looks like the time of KitKat’s growth is over and the Android version lost its market share for the first time this month, revealed Google in its latest Android platform distribution numbers.

As per Google’s numbers, Lollipop has continued the growth and jumped significantly since last month. Android device running Lollipop are now present on almost ten percent of the total active Android devices, up from 5.4 percent in April. KitKat is down to 39.8 percent from 41.4 percent and so are the rest of the Android versions.

Here is a quick look at the market share of various active Android versions:

  • Lollipop: 9.7 percent
  • KitKat: 39.8 percent
  • Jelly Bean: 39.2 percent
  • Ice Cream Sandwich: 5.3 percent
  • Gingerbread: 5.7 percent
  • Froyo: 0.3 percent

Key highlights of the latest Android platform distribution numbers:

  • Android devices running v4.4 or above are now present on almost 50 percent of the total active Android devices (49.5 percent to be precise).
  • This is the second month that KitKat is leading the Android versions, but given continuous Lollipop update roll-outs, KitKat’s market share is expected to drop quickly.
  • Within just three months, Lollipop has jumped from 1.6 percent to 9.7 percent
