Cyanogen Inc on Monday announced that it recently closed a Series C funding round, which was led by Premji Invest (family office of Wipro Chairman Azim Premji). The company raised $80 million as a part of this round, which will be used to hire talent and accelerate the development of Cyanogen OS platform.
“We’re committed to creating an open computing platform that fundamentally empowers the entire mobile ecosystem from developers to hardware makers, and most importantly, consumers around the world. We’re excited to have the backing of an amazingly diverse group of strategic investors who are supporting us in building a truly open Android,” said Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen Inc.
Apart from Premji Invest, Twitter Ventures, Qualcomm Incorporated, Telefónica Ventures, Smartfren Telecom, Index Ventures, Access Industries, Rupert Murdoch, Vivi Nevo, and several unnamed investor also participated in the funding round. The new invesntor were joined by existing investors like Benchmark, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, and Tencent Holdings Ltd.
With the latest round, Cyanogen’s total funding has reached $110 million.
The company is hoping that it will ride on the popularity of Android to become the third-most popular mobile platform after Android and iOS.
