Moto 360 clear leader

Android Wear might have piqued consumer interest last year, but the actual device shipments weren’t exactly earth-shattering. According to research firm Canalys, just over 720,000 Android Wear devices were shipped worldwide in 2014, out of the total 4.6 million smart band shipments.

Canalys noted that among the Android Wear devices, Moto 360 was a clear leader, trumping LG, Asus, Samsung and Sony devices.

Samsung, which also uses Tizen for its wearable devices, isn’t seeing any better results with platform. Although Canalys hasn’t revealed the exact shipment details for Samsung’s Tizen smartwatches, it did note that they were not selling well.

‘Samsung has launched six devices in just 14 months, on different platforms and still leads the smart band market. But it has struggled to keep consumers engaged and must work hard to attract developers while it focuses on Tizen for its wearables.’ said Canalys VP and Principal Analyst Chris Jones.

With Apple Watch’s arrival this year, Android Wear will have even more competition this year. Canalys warns that to take on the Apple device, Android Wear will need to improve significantly in the future, but believes that the platform will be able to do so.
