News discovery app SmartNews has announced that it is making it easier to find local news in the United States. The app is adding algorithmically-populated local news channels for twelve major US cities and more will be added in the future. The cities are San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Miami, Atlanta, Seattle and Boston.

“The magic of SmartNews is an algorithm that combines a sense of what’s important with a sense of what’s just plain interesting, and even fun. Now we’re bringing that magic to local news, too,” said Rich Jaroslovsky, SmartNews’s Vice President for Content.

SmartNews also revealed that it already has over one million users in US within three months of the launch and continues to rank on top of the news category in Google Play.

To continue the momentum, the app has recently added features news channel for a number of publishers like TIME, USA Today, Fast Company, MSNBC, Upworthy, Perez Hilton, Today.com, Entrepreneur, Opposing Views, The Daily Dot and Reuters.

To remind you, SmartNews was originally launched in Japan in December 2012 and entered with global market with US edition in October last year.
