Corning introduces Gorilla Glass 4 to withstand everyday drops

Corning on Thursday unveiled its Gorilla Glass 4, which it claims is two times tougher than any of its competitors. All set for debut in smartphones and tablets in the coming months, Gorilla Glass 4 has been designed to fix the biggest problem with smart device displays – screen breaks from everyday drops.

“With Gorilla Glass 4, we have focused on significantly improving protection against sharp contact damage, which is the primary reason that mobile devices break. Dropping and breaking a phone is a common problem, and one that our customers have asked us to help address,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials.

According to Corning, its scientists examined hundreds of broken devices and found that damage caused by sharp contact was a major contributor to screen-breakage, thus the newly developed Gorilla Glass 4 will provide at least two times improved damage resistance over competitive aluminosilicate glass.

Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4 is still breakable, but it is better than the previous generations and will turn up unscathed almost 80 percent of the time in the case of a drop, noted the company in a press note.  The first devices will the new cover glass are expected to arrive in the market before the end of this year, but we expect to see a bigger number at the CES trade fair in January next year.
