Facebook on Monday announced that its Messenger app has crossed 500 million users. Since its introduction in 2011, Messenger has seen a steadily flow of users, but the number of new users grew multiple times in the past few months after Facebook made it compulsory to use Messenger app to chat with other Facebook users on mobile and removed the functionality from main Facebook app.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently defended the decision of make Messenger mandatory for chat on mobile in a Reddit AMA and stated it will allow the company in providing a better experience by separating Messenger from the main app and similar words have been echoed as a part of Facebook’s latest Messenger app announcement.

“Today more than 500 million people are using Messenger each month and we’re more committed than ever to make it the best possible messaging experience. Messenger was the first of our standalone apps, and unlike our core Facebook apps, it focused on one use case – messaging,” noted Facebook in a press note.
