Oppo R5 debuts with just 4.85mm thick chassis

Oppo R5Alongside N3, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo also unveiled the new R5 smartphone in Singapore today. The Oppo R5 sports a 5.2-inch full HD AMOLED display and 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor in a 4.85mm thick chassis, making it world’s thinnest smartphone at this point.

Featuring a metallic micro-arc frame, the Oppo R5 packs 2GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 with Color OS 2.0, and 2000 mAh battery. On the imaging front, Oppo has included a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front snapper in the smartphone. In order to achieve the slimness, Oppo had to let some comprises in R5, like putting a smaller battery or removing the 3.5mm audio jack. The company will reportedly be bundling a headset, which connects via microUSB 2.0 port on R5.

“This phone (R5) has been developed with the end user in mind. We used cutting edge manufacturing techniques to create a phone that fits perfectly into the users’ hands, and that feels incredible. The frame has been forged nine times and then finished by hand to give a perfect sheen and feel. It has a quality that is not available anywhere else in the industry,” Sky Li, General Manager of OPPO.

According to Oppo, R5 will retail for $499 and will go on sale in over 20 markets. There is no word on the availability at this point.
