Toshiba on Wednesday announced a successor to the company’s previously launched Chromebook in the form of Toshiba Chromebook 2. Although the majority of improvements in the new model are cosmetic, the company will offer an optional IPS full HD display, which can be chosen by the consumers instead of the standard HD version present in the base model.

According to Toshiba, Chromebook 2 sports a 13.3-inch display in a very compact chassis. The device also packs a sound system by Skullcandy, which, the company claims, will offer great audio quality.

“Our hardware design is evolving alongside Chrome OS. The Toshiba Chromebook 2 has the right mix of features and performance to make it a standout device in the category. We designed our new Chromebooks for both the consumer and education markets, focusing on key experience-driving features that cross boundaries – a great screen, awesome audio and a stylish, thin and light design for greater portability,” said Philip Osako, senior director of product marketing, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division.

Among other specifications, the Chromebook 2 comes with 4th generation Intel Celeron processor, 2/ 4GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, SD card slot, and HD webcam. The device also sports one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, and HDMI output.

Pricing and availability:

Toshiba’s Chromebook 2 will go on sale October 5, starting $249.99 ($329.99 for full HD version) in the United States.
