Android Wear, Auto & TV devices won’t have manufacturer skins: Google

Android Wear smartwatchesAndroid smartphones and tablets are already marred with manufacturer skins, which often hamper the performance of the devices rather than adding any value, however if you were worried about the same on Android Wear, Auto or Android TV, we have some good news.

According to a report in Ars Technica, Google engineering director David Burke has confirmed that there won’t be any manufacturer skins on Android Wear, Android Auto or Android TV devices.

Burke told Ars that the user interface and underlying software in these devices will be controlled by Google, not the manufacturers. “The device manufacturers can brand it, and they might have services that they want to include with it, but otherwise it should be the same,” he stated.

This means, the Android TV device from Samsung might come with some Samsung apps but the interface will be stock.  Google support page for Android Wear devices LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live clearly lists the manufacturer additions like Heart Rate monitor app in Gear Live or World Clock in G Watch, rest everything is expected to be the same.

This is a welcome news for the consumers and will force manufacturers to improve their devices in the areas, which actually matter, to from others differentiate – like battery life etc.

In most of these devices, Google plans to push updates from its end. Android TV devices are almost certain to get Android updates from Google, however for Wear and Auto, the company is still working out the specifics.
