Google has released an updated version of Hangouts Android app in Google Play, which brings new features and performance enhancements. Rolling out in phases, the update carries version 2.1 and will reach your Android device in the next few days.

Coming to the details, Hangouts 2.1 now includes merged conversations, which means, the consumers who use Hangouts as their default SMS app, will now see both text messages and chats in one view. Google has also included a home-screen widget and simpler contact list in the app.

Check out the full change-log below

  • Simplified contact list: Now, there are two main sections in contacts — People you Hangout With, and Phone Contacts
  • Homescreen widget: For quick access to your recent conversations
  • Performance improvements: Better quality video calls, as well as improved SMS and MMS reliability.
  • Merged conversations: SMS and Hangout conversations with the same recipient are now combined into a single conversation.

There was no need to make signing up for G+ compulsory for Hangouts. Isn’t gmail id enough? Why force users into G+?
