Former Apple CEO Sculley to launch smartphone brand in India: Report

John SculleyLooks like former Apple CEO John Sculley is entering the smartphone market this year. According to a report in BGR India, Sculley plans to launch a mobile phone brand in India, which will be led by Ajay Sharma. Sharma was earlier associated with Micromax’s smartphone division and HTC India.

The specifics of this move from Sculley are not known right now but BGR India does note that the brand is being funded by Singapore-based Inflexionpoint, where Sculley is a managing partner.

This news comes just a few months after he was reported to be considering a bid for BlackBerry but was apparently late to the party and the Canadian smartphone maker has already announced $1 billion investment deal.

BGR India notes that Sculley’s brand will launch a series of smartphones as well as feature phones in the country. The smartphones are expected to be priced between INR 5,000 and INR 15,000.

Former Apple CEO’s plans to enter budget smartphone market and not the high-end segment aren’t surprising, given he has been a proponent of cheaper iPhone and wanted Apple to release sucha iPhone in emerging markets as the developed smartphone markets are getting saturated.

While, it is unknown which smartphone platform Scully’s company will be using, we are expecting it be Android as it is the most sensible choice right now.
