Sony has announced that it has added Xperia L smartphone to AOSP for Xperia project and is now looking for community support. Interesting developers can check out the Github page of AOSP for Xperia to contribute.
According Sony, it already has a test build of Android 4.4 KitKat ready for Xperia L and a lot of stuff is working right now. Some of the features like Bluetooth and GPS have been disabled due to licensing reasons but it is still a quiet decent build.
“It is possible to make phone calls, send and receive messages, surf the Internet through either the mobile network or Wi-Fi® connection, take photos and shoot video clips. The LED light, NFC and sensors are also working (at least partially),” Sony noted in a blog post.
The decision to add Xperia L to AOSP for Xperia is an interesting one, as Sony has traditionally included high-end devices to its AOSP project but Xperia L is a budget smartphone.
“This is the first time we’ve added support for a device with the 1 GHz Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core chip,” Sony writes in the blog post.
This inclusion of Xperia L to AOSP for Xperia project will also be helpful for developers who are trying to make Android 4.4-based custom firmware for this phone.
