HTC diversifies, includes chips from ST Ericsson, Spreadtrum in Desire phones

Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has long used Qualcomm chips in its smartphones, apart from some exceptions like Tegra 3 in One X and One X+. The company is now thinking of diversifying on that front to take on the stiff competition from budget smartphone makers.

HTC is looking to use more chips from other chip-vendors rather than just relying on Qualcomm. The company earlier today unveiled four new smartphones for Taiwan market, out of which only one – Desire 300 – uses Qualcomm SoC, rest all phones are powered by processors from other vendors.

HTC Desire 700 includes Spreadtrum Shark quad-core 1.2GHz processor, Desire 501 comes with ST-Ericsson U8520 dual-core 1.15GHz processor and Desire 601 packs Broadcom Java quad-core 1.2GHz processor.

While we are not seeing the direct impact of using these chips on the prices of HTC smartphones as they continue to be high but we hope that HTC has a plan in action as the future looks a little bleak for this smartphone maker.
