Global shortage of Nexus 5 due to stronger-than-expected demand: LG exec

As wait for Nexus 5 release in India, LG has officially launched the phone in Taiwan with telecom operator Far Eastone Telecom. Nexus 5 will be available starting today for NT$14,900 (US$504) without contract or for NT$1,990 on contact with a monthly rate of NT$1,373.

LG is hoping that the release of Nexus 5 will help it increase its market share to 5 percent in Taiwan, which reached 4 percent last month after LG G2 debut in the country.

“LG aims to sell 4,000 units of the Nexus 5 a month in the Taiwan market,” said Kim Bing Hyung, chairman of LG Electronics Taiwan. The number could be increased or decreased depending market demand and supply situations, Hyung added. He also noted that there is global shortage of the device due to better-than-expected demand of the phone but did not share anything on what the company was doing to resolve it.

To remind you, LG Nexus 5 packs 4.95-inch FHD display, Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM and Android 4.4. LG has only released the 16GB model in Taiwan and does not plan to launch 32GB version.

The LG executive shared that the company also plans to introduce its 8.3-inch G Pad into the local market soon and will launch 6-inch G Flex curved smartphone in first quarter of 2014.
