Amazon’s rumoured set top box delayed: Report

AmazonOnline retail giant Amazon’s rumoured set-top box, which was expected to arrive in time for holidays, has been delayed, reports The Verge. According to the tech blog, Amazon recently decided to delay the device but the exact reasons for this delay are not known.

The Verge confirms via its sources that Amazon’s set top box will run on Fire OS, which is a forked version of Android and is used in Kindle Fire tablets. The latest Fire OS version available is 3.0 and the company will most probably be using the same or a tweaked version in its set-top box.

As per some recent trademark filing, this device could be dubbed Firetube but there has been no confirmation.  The device will be tightly integrated with Amazon’s Instant Video service, which is getting big every day. The company has even started producing original content for the same like Netflix and Hulu.

Amazon is also expected to allow its set-top box users to install third-party apps, probably from its own app store. Other details regarding the same are currently a mystery.
