Ubuntu Edge misses its crowdfunding goal by over $19 million

Canonical’s massive crowdfunding campaign for Ubuntu Edge smartphone came to an end minutes ago. As anticipated by many, it did not reach its goal of raising $32 million and fell short by over $19 million.

“So ends a crazy month. We’ve broken records, we’ve been written and talked about across the world, we’ve worn out our F5 keys, and we’ve learned a lot of invaluable lessons about crowdfunding. Our bold campaign to build a visionary new device ultimately fell short, but we can take away so many positives,” Mark Shuttleworth of Canonical wrote in an update on the Indiegogo campaign page.

During this last month Ubuntu Edge campaign raised just over $12.8 million from 27,000 backers including Bloomberg LLC, which pledged $80,000 for the campaign. The backers will now receive refunds.
