Old Design and New Design

Google has updated the Play Store device client again to bring some subtle changes to the new design, which was introduced in v4.0. The new version is rolling out now and might take days to reach every Android user.

The most visible change is the new content section buttons, which are no longer plain white as you can see in the image below.

Google has also removed any traces of the dark coloured Holo theme from Play Store with this update and you will no longer get the dark background in settings or menu items or even buttons. The company has also changed the ‘My wishlist’ view from a list to a grid based cards design.

In addition, the ‘Update All’ now works with the apps with new permissions too, Google will still show you the permissions to check and accept, but you won’t need to open every app with changed permissions and then follow the tiring process.

Lastly, the company has also introduced a new interface for Google Play gift cards and added the recently spotted “App data sync” option, but it does not seem to be working right now.

If you don’t want to wait for the official roll-out, the APK file of the Google Play Store 4.1.6 (5.76MB) is already circulating around the web and you can download it and install it like any other app.

I installed it.. First thing that I felt was the location based app suggestions. Previously I was getting more of India based apps now I am getting app suggestions for Chennai/Tamil which is where I am staying. I am not sure if this is true for everybody.
