Google to open Glass retail stores: Report

Google GlassGoogle is reportedly planning to open retail stores to sell Google Glass devices, reports Business Insider. According to the site, these stores will exclusively sell Glass devices and nothing more. This is not the first time we are hearing about Google’s plans to open retail stores, but the last report suggested that Google is planning to sell all sorts of stuff in their retail stores and not just Google Glass.

It would be interesting to see if Google really wants to open retail stores to sell just Google Glass devices because that would mean the company’s really planning to make the device a consumer success. Opening retail stores requires all kinds on investment and would be a first for the company, which had just entered even the hardware segment.

“Our source indicated that Google was looking to create stores specifically for Glass. These Glass stores would put the Glass brand front and center. They would help customers get set up with Glass,” Business Insider noted in the report.

Google is expected to start selling Glass in retail around the first quarter of next year. The device is currently being sold to select individuals for a hefty price tag of $1500.

In related news, Google has also started pushing out the first software update to Glass Explorer Edition today. The update bumps the software on the device to XE5 version.
