Although we saw a lot of 5-inch or bigger smartphones (also called phablets) in 2012, 2013 is going to be a year of phablets. We have already seen most of the major launches at CES being 5-inch or bigger smartphones and now even local manufacturers are moving in the same direction.

Following the footsteps of Micromax, iBall, Intex, Zync and others, Lava has now launched a phablet in the country. Dubbed as IRIS 501, it has been priced at INR 9,999. Similar to other offerings in the same price bracket, Lava IRIS 501 also comes with a dual-core processor, Android 4.0 and 5MP rear camera with a VGA front shooter.

Company has also packed a 2,300 mAh battery, and a bunch of popular local Android apps and games. The on-board 5-inch display is WVGA (800x480p). Among other details, IRIS 501 is a dual-SIM smartphone and comes with 4GB of internal storage, 512MB RAM, and microSD card slot.

The smartphone will join company’s N350 and N400 in the IRIS smartphone series.
