More details on India’s $35 Aakash tablet

In another 90 minutes, Indian Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal will be unveiling the so-called “$35 tablet”, which will be sold for INR 2999 ($60) to retail consumers.  But, we have all the details for you even before the launch; we have reported that the tablet will be called Aakash for students and Ubislate for retail consumers.

According to Datawind, the government version “Aakash” will not have GPRS connectivity, just WiFi and a total of 100,000 units will be manufactured on the pilot basis first.

Here are the full specifications of this tablet:

  • Android 2.2
  • 7 inch Resistive touchscreen
  • Connexant processor with Graphics accelerator
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 2GB Flash memory
  • Full sized-USB port & Micro-SD slot
  • 3.5mm jack
  • WiFi

With all the basic features like wi-fi connectivity, cloud storage, expandable memory and two USB ports, the $35 tablet is here to make a difference and more importantly address the needs of students across the length and breadth of India.

  2. how foolish it is.. no gprs, no camera… can it really be useful.?? i dont think so.. though it has android, it is of no use for me. it has a weak resolution also.. . and can it really benefit the students…?? ok. lets see how it rocks the markets.. it will be sold in tonnes but i will never buy this..
