Designed for entry- to mid-level segment of the market, the smartphones use an integrated chip provided by Marvell and run on 3G technology developed in China (commonly known as TD-SCDMA).
“I believe the Asus TD smartphones will be just the beginning of mass deployment of cost effective, advanced TD-SCDMA-based smartphones throughout China,” said Weili Dai, Marvell co-founder.
More details about the products including pricing and availability are likely to be announced in coming days. Just to give you an idea, entry-level smartphones usually cost less than USD 300.
“We believe the emergence of the Android OS has lowered the technology barriers between handset brand vendors capable of high-end product development and handset [original equipment manufacturers],” analysts at the IT consultant firm Nomura said in a sector report released in January.
