NTT Docomo doubles sales targets thanks to Android

Encouraged by the mounting demand for Android based devices, NTT DoCoMo has almost doubled its annual sales target for smartphones and tablet computers.

Japan’s largest mobile-phone operator now aims to put on the market 2.5 million mobile devices that can surf the Web, play music and run applications, as compared to the 1.3 million forecast in October, President Ryuji Yamada said at a briefing in Tokyo today.

Official figures claim that till date, the Tokyo-based company has snapped out 600,000 of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB’s Xperia and 300,000 of Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Android phones to date.

The company today reported a net income of 134.2 billion yen ($1.6 billion) for the quarter ended Dec. 31, compared with 134.6 billion yen in the similar fiscal last year.
