Android phones to outnumber iPhones by 2012 end

Smartphones running Google’s Android operating system are likely to outnumber iPhones by the end of 2012, says marketing and analysis firm eMarketer.

Android-equipped phones will increase their market share to 31 percent over the next two years while Apple’s iPhone will calm down at 30 per cent, estimates eMarketer.

“With a growing roster of manufacturer and carrier partners in every major market and market segment, scale for Android is coming quickly in terms of device, market share, apps and ad revenues,” said Noah Elkin, an analyst at eMarketer and author of an upcoming report on mobile devices.

As we all know, Android had a meager share of only six percent in 2009 which zoomed to 24 per cent last year.
