In the third quarter 2010, the total number of Android phone sales was approximately 178,000 units, significantly up from only 63,000 units in the second quarter.
According to IDC’s India Quarterly Mobile Handsets Tracker, 3Q 2010, Samsung led the Android adoption in India, while Sony Ericsson was at top in 2nd quarter. A worldwide hit Galaxy S, along with cheaper Galaxy 5 and Galaxy 3 were the main drivers for company’s Android shipments in India.
We are expecting that the fourth quarter of the year will have even more Android shipments, considering the availability of cheaper Android options such as Micromax Andro, and LG Optimus One. In a country like India, where smartphone shipments are still less than 10 pc of total mobile shipments, sub 15K Android phones are going to become the main carriers for mass adoption.
