WhatsApp Disappearing Messages feature is now live in India. The Facebook-owned company announced the feature earlier this month and had stated that it would complete the rollout by the end of November. It seems the rollout is complete in India. Disappearing Messages feature is now available for WhatsApp users in India in both individual and group chats.
According to an official WhatsApp support document, the Disappearing Messages feature allows users, as you can expect, send messages that disappear. Any messages sent with this feature enabled, in particular individual or group chats, will disappear after seven days from the chat. This feature is basically like Incognito mode on browsers but with a seven day history.
How to use Disappearing Messages feature on WhatsApp
Basically, the first the feature needs to be switched in whichever individual or group chat you want to use it. While both sender or receiver can turn the feature on or off in individual chats, only the admins can do the same in group chats.
Once the Disappearing Messages feature is switched on, any messages sent in that chat from that point will disappear after seven days whether you have seen them or not. WhatsApp warns that the message may still appear after seven days in the notifications if the same has not been opened or dismissed.
WhatsApp also shows a notification in the chat box to let you know when the feature is on.

- Head over to Disappearing Messages settings
To switch the Disappearing Messages feature on or off in individual chats, tap on that contact name and you will see the settings.
- Enable or disable the feature for individual contacts
Once you are in contact-specific settings, you can enable or disable the Disappearing Messages feature.
- Enable or disable the feature for a group chat
For groups, head over to Group Info to switch the feature on or off.
It is important to note here that your contacts can still take screenshots of the Disappearing Messages, so make sure you only use it with trusted contacts for sensitive content. Also, any media sent while the Disappearing Messages feature is enabled may disappear from the chat window after seven days but it will get saved to the receiver’s phone if the person has auto-download media option enabled.
The WhatsApp Disappearing Messages feature is available on all platforms, including Android, iPhone, KaiOS, Web and Desktop.
