No more major Chrome releases for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Google has announced that it is freezing the development of Chrome browser for the devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Chrome version 42 will be last major version for the Android version.

According to Google, the number of Chrome users with Android 4.0 has been constantly decreasing and the backward compatibility has been stopping them from building new features that won’t work or work well on older devices.

“In the last year, we’ve seen the number of Chrome users running ICS drop by thirty percent. Developing new features on older phones has become increasingly challenging, and supporting ICS takes time away from building new experiences on the devices owned by the vast majority of our users,” wrote Aurimas Lutikas, Software Engineer, Google in a blog post.

Android 4.0 users will still get security patches until the version 43 of Chrome is released, but nothing after that. If you are one of the consumers, who use Chrome on Android 4.0, Google’s decision will have no change for you apart from the fact that Chrome on your Android devices won’t be updated any longer. If you have any other questions, Google has created a detailed FAQs list on the same, you can check it out here.
