Cyanogen Inc to bundle its software with Qualcomm’s reference hardware

QRDCyanogen Inc has partnered with Qualcomm to offer Cyanogen OS with Qualcomm Reference Design (QRD) for various Snapdragon processors. This move will help the small device makers, who use reference designs as a turnkey solution to churn-out smartphones without major development costs. Such vendors will now have the option to choose Cyanogen OS as the bundled operating system for the Qualcomm Snapdragon reference designs.

“We’re delighted to collaborate with Qualcomm on their QRD program. We’re addressing the needs of device makers in developed and developing markets looking for a truly differentiated software experience that matter to consumers,” said Kirt McMaster, CEO, Cyanogen Inc.

According to Cyanogen Inc, the Cyanogen OS and its features/ enhancements will be available for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors in the 200, 400 and 600 series. The OS being offered by Cyanogen Inc for QRD will be based on Android 5.0 and include enhancements like new launcher and improved versions of dialer, messaging, contacts, and calendar apps. It will be available beginning April, indicating that we can expect to see new Cyanogen OS-powered Android phones in the coming quarters.

In addition to the Qualcomm tie-up, Cyanogen Inc has also revealed that it is introducing a new logo for the company as well as a branding experience, which will be used across the company properties like the website.

“We’re announcing a new look that we hope captures our commitment to openness. This new approach celebrates space, with minimal letterforms that don’t quite connect, giving the logo a sense of motion and a feeling of inherent energy.
