Google has announced that it has released the kernel source code for the newly launched Android One device family. As all three Android One phones – Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream Uno – use the same KitKat build, the source code is same for all smartphones. Interested parties can find the source code here.

“Today we pushed the kernel source for the Android One device family. The kernel source can be found on the android-mediatek-sprout-3.4-kitkat-mr2 branch in the kernel/mediatek project.  It’s also tagged with ‘android-4.4.4_r3’,” wrote Google’s Bill in Android Building group.

This should jumpstart the custom ROM development for these smartphones and with XDA and other similar forums filled with modders and developers from India, we can expect a great response from the community.

Note: The post has been updated to reflect the changed location of kernal source code. It has now been moved a newly created kernel tree for MediaTek.

I better start saving up to get myself an Asus made A1 phone (with more than 4GB storage for a change!) immediately upon release, whenever that may be. Kasam se
