Amazon’s media-streaming device is coming in April: WSJ

Amazon LogoAmazon is reportedly planning to start selling its media-streaming device in early-April. The company is opting for a Chromecast like form-factor for the device as it looks to enter the living room arena.

According to a report in Wall Street Journal, the device will be available via Amazon.com as well as third-party retailers like Best Buy and Staples. It will support not just Amazon apps but also other media-streaming applications like Netflix, Pandora and Hulu Plus. The pricing still remains a mystery but it is expected to be aggressive with bundled Amazon Prime membership for select period.

WSJ also notes that the device will carry the “Fire” branding (probably Firetube, which was spotted in USPTO database) and will run on Fire OS, like Kindle Fire series of tablets. The specifications are unclear right now.

In another report, Techcrunch is saying that this Chromecast lookalike will come with support for streaming PC gaming titles like Onlive. An alleged controller for the games was leaked via a regulator recently. According to the blog’s sources, Amazon will be offering top tier games, which will be streamed from Amazon servers at 30fps.
