Asus Chromebox announced, starts at $179

After a small teaser by Google in September last year, Asus has taken the wraps off its first Chromebox today.

The Taiwanese manufacturer has unveiled Asus Chromebox (yes, that’s the name). Powered by Intel’s fourth-gen processors like all recent Chrome OS devices, it will go on sale next month in North America.

According to Asus, it is the most compact Chromebox yet but still features all the necessary components like card reader, 4 USB3.0 ports, one HDMI port, DisplayPort, and Ethernet. It also packs 16GB SSD, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

“The ASUS Chromebox offers the simplicity, security and speed of Chrome OS in the most compact and powerful Chrome device to date. Perfect for home, the classroom or the office, Chromebox is designed for the way we use computers today,” said Felix Lin, director of product management, Google.ASUS Chromebox

The consumers will have the option to choose Core i7-4600U, Core i3-4010U or Celeron 2955U as the processor of choice in Chromebox. The Celeron model with 2GB RAM is the most entry-level and will cost just $179. There is option for 4GB of RAM too. The i3 and i7 models will support 4K Ultra High Definition (4K/UHD) displays.

Like other Chrome OS devices, buyers of Asus Chromebox will also get free 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years.
