Nexus 7 KRT16S updateVery often we read that a particular Nexus device is getting an Android update but our devices don’t show any such update. We keep on hitting ‘check update’ again and again on our phone/ tablet but to no avail. Now, Google engineer Dan Morrill has explained the exact process of Nexus device update roll-out, it should give you a clear idea of why your Nexus 4 or any other Nexus device hasn’t received the Android 4.4 OTA yet.

Nexus OTA update roll-out schedule:

“Rollouts are conducted in phases. Typically they start at 1% of devices for around 24 – 48 hours; we watch the return rates and resulting device checkins and error reports (if any), and make sure nothing looks wrong before sending it to more. Then typically it goes to 25%, 50%, 100% over the course of a week or two,” Morrill writes.

Can you get OTA update by checking for update again and again?

“Once your device checks in (means: you manually check for the update or your device automatically checks for the update as per its schedule) and gets turned down, that’s it until the next batch. Mashing on the “check for updates” button just causes your device to check in again, and get automatically turned down again. That said, once the new batch does start, hitting that button does give you a new roll of the dice — but once. Since devices usually only check in for system updates every 24 hours (I think? Certainly on a many-hours basis) this can get you your shot sooner than it would happen on its own,” Morrill adds.

So, get it now. From next time, just let your Nexus phone/ tablet check for the update by itself and if you are lucky, you will get the update soon. Can’t wait, then sideload the update by downloading it from the OTA URLs that get shared all around the web.
