After a flood of leaks and rumours, Google has made the seven-inch Nexus 7 tablet official today. Running on Android 4.1 aka Jelly Bean, the tablet features the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 1GB RAM, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth and a 1280x800p display.
Nexus 7 is available for preorder today from Google Play in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia, and starts at $199 in the U.S. It will start shipping mid-July.
Interestingly, it is also the first Android tablet to come with Chrome as the default web browser. The tablet has been manufactured by Asus with instructions from Google.
More from Google blog:
All of this great Google Play content comes to life on Nexus 7, a powerful new tablet with a vibrant, 7” 1280×800 HD display. The Tegra-3 chipset, with a quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU, makes everything, including games, extremely fast. And best of all, it’s only 340 grams, lighter than most tablets out there. Nexus 7 was built to bring you the best of Google in the palm of your hand. Hang out with up to 10 friends on Google+ using the front-facing camera, browse the web blazingly fast with Chrome and, of course, crank through your emails with Gmail.
Nexus 7 comes preloaded with some great entertainment, including the movie “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” the book “The Bourne Dominion,” magazines like Condé Nast Traveler and Popular Science, and songs from bands like Coldplay and the Rolling Stones. We’ve also included a $25 credit to purchase your favorite movies, books and more from Google Play, for a limited time.

Does is support 3g dongle?

Just wonder why 3g support is missing..

i didn’t find the tablet is attractive to users as it lacks 3g support. in my opinion, just Wi-Fi only version of tablets are waste. i agree that price is low on contract but contract free versions are costly i guess. i like new os jelly bean 4.1 and its features.

I think this is contract-free. That’s how it’s selling on google play, right?
Personally, I like this thing. 3G has its disadvantages, esp with poor signals in India. And it takes up a lot of battery power. But I’m sure that bu not keeping 3G, a lot of their market is gone.
