We will not provide software updates for OnePlus One in India: Cyanogen (Updated)

Update: The Cyanogen-Micromax-OnePlus mess continues and after saying that it will provide software update for OnePlus One in India, Cyanogen has now announced that it is only going to provide updates for the phones bought from outside India and those purchased from official India sales partner Amazon will not be getting the future CM updates. Looks like OnePlus One buyers in the country will indeed have to wait for the new software from OnePlus for any updates.

Here is the full CM statement:

Since we clarified our support for OTA firmware updates for OnePlus One global devices, we’ve received a number of inquiries regarding OnePlus One devices sold in India.

As we had pledged to our users, OnePlus One global devices will receive our OTA firmware updates. If a user in India purchased a OnePlus One global device in channels outside of India, they will receive our OTA firmware updates. However, this excludes OnePlus One regional devices sold directly in India. We are committed to our exclusive partnership in India with Micromax, which will be launching its first Cyanogen OS device under their new YU brand.

Earlier: After an eventful week filled with confusion, Cyanogen Inc. has come forward to announce that it will provide updates for OnePlus One smartphones launched in India. While the company notes that the reports of CM ditching OnePlus for deal with Micromax were misinformation, it seems likely that Micromax, Cyanogen Inc. and OnePlus reached some sort of arrangement behind the scenes.

“To clarify misinformation out there, the OnePlus One will get OTA firmware updates for all global devices, including global devices for our users in India. Rather than have misinformation continue to circulate out there, we felt it important to bring this matter to rest,” Cyanogen Inc. wrote in a blog post.

The latest development will bring some respite to the OnePlus One buyers in the country, who now don’t need to go through the unnecessary software trouble.

OnePlus has been silent since the CM announcement and it is unclear whether the company will still hasten the development of its own software for OnePlus One, or the plans will now be dropped.

To remind you, OnePlus was launched in India earlier this week amid the reports of Micromax’s exclusive deal with Cyanogen Inc. for device support in the country and OnePlus’ quick reaction to fast track the development of its own software for the phone.

  1. By global devices, do Cyanogen means devices other than Indian or it includes all devices including those selling on I understand that Cyanogen had to tweak its devices to cater to Indian market on account of network specifications.

  2. Nice play of words by Cyanogen there. ‘Global’ OnePlus One Devices in India are not the same as ‘Indian’ OnePlus One devices. Of course a US bought Nexus will get Updates along with the US editions and with specific software. Really disappointed by the whole fiasco.

  3. There is no way that CyanogenMod can block the updates in India since all OPO devices being sold are Global versions and so I went ahead and bought one! Lucky me 😛 !
