Google has announced that it will begin rolling out the Android 5.0 OTA update for Android Wear devices next week, which will bring the much-anticipated third-party watch faces support. The company has revealed that watch faces will be available via Google Play.
“We’ve got dozens of examples to get you started—from the unpredictable Minions in Despicable Me to the X-Ray artistry of Hugh Turvey. And because the new Watch Face API is available to all developers, you can expect even more choices in the weeks and months ahead,” David Singleton, Director of Engineering for Android Wear, wrote in a blog post.
Apart from the watch faces, the update will also include several other improvements like improved access to settings, easy navigation and more.
Google is also releasing an updated version of Android Wear companion app to make browsing, downloading, and switching watch faces easy.
Watch Face API now available
Along with the release of the new Android Wear version with custom watch face support, Google has also released the official watch face API for the developers. The devs can use this API to create interesting and fun watch faces for the consumers and then offer them via Google Play.
“Watch faces give users even more ways to express their personal style, while creating an opportunity for developers to customize the most prominent UI feature of the watches. Watch faces have been the most requested feature from users and developers alike, and we can’t wait to see what you build for them,” Wayne Piekarski, Developer Advocate at Google, wrote in a blog post.
Developers can find more information about creating watch faces and the publishing them in Google Play at the official blog post.
