Motorola Shamu aka Nexus 6
A mock-up of the Motorola-made next Nexus smartphone

Seems like it. Motorola Shamu, which has got nods from multiple sources for being the codename for the next Nexus smartphone, is likely to feature a 5.92-inch QHD (2560x1440p) display.

Motorola Shamu first appeared in an “Android Police” report in July 2014, which had suggested the 5.9-inch display size. The phone was further confirmed in a “The Information” report but later a sighting in the AnTuTu benchmark database indicated at a 5.2-inch display size. Now, 9To5Google has come forward with its own sources stating that the initial reports about the 5.9-inch display size were indeed correct and the phone will have an exact display size of 5.92-inches with QHD resolution.

“We can now corroborate previous rumors that its screen size nudges it out of smartphone territory, and closer to the likes of the recent push for phablet devices. If any smartphone is really a phablet, this is it—shipping with a behemoth screen that’s a massive 5.92-inches diagonally, with the device’s body being just a bit larger than that,” wrote 9to5Google.

The folks at 9To5Google also claims to have seen a prototype of the next Nexus smartphone (aka Nexus 6/ Nexus X) and notes that the phone is like a bigger version of the second-gen Moto X smartphone. There will be some design differences between the Nexus and new Moto X but the overall design will remain similar, which is not a bad thing.

Among other specifications, the phone is said to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor and will come with 3GB of RAM, 32-bit version of Android L, 13MP rear camera, 2MP front camera and 3200 mAh battery.

The phone is expected to be announced next month with availability in November. Some rumours point to October 15 or 16 being the expected announcement date.

Personally, I am disappointed to see Google going with such a large display size in a Nexus smartphone. Unless the company is planning to do an Apple with a larger Nexus and a normal-sized Nexus smartphone, I don’t understand why the folks at Mountain View will do this?
