HTC unveils Desire 616, a mid-range octa-core smartphone

HTC Desire 616HTC has announced a new mid-range Android smartphone “Desire 616” in Asia. The phone is already on sale in China and will be released in North Asia, South Asia and Russia beginning today.

As per a report in The Next Web, HTC has no plans to launch the phone outside Asia right now.

Coming to the phone specifications, Desire 616 features a 5-inch 720p HD display, 1.4GHz octa-core MediaTek processor, 2000 mAh battery and dual-SIM support. The phone also packs 8MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 4GB of on-board storage and microSD card slot.

The phone runs on Android 4.2.2 and includes Sense 5.5 with Blinkfeed and other software customisations.

HTC has revealed the Singapore pricing of the phone – S$298 (US$238), which is quite decent for the given specifications but the presence of Jelly Bean on the phone is a disappointment.

There is no word on the India launch of the Desire 616 right now but we expect to see the release in the coming weeks.HTC Desire 616

  1. I just somehow don’t get the 4GB storage part! With Google disabling app installation on SD cards, it is imperative that modern phones come with at least 16GB inbuilt storage (not even 8GB will do with all those added bloatware), seeing as the difference even at the retail level between a 4GB and a 16GB card is only a few hundred Rupees and it’s so much cheaper for the bulk buying OEM’s!

For a 15K phone to come with just the 4GB is absolutely criminal. It’s about time Google start enforcing some strict rules about what OEM’s can and cannot do to cut corners, dammit!
