Ubuntu EdgeCanonical seeks $32 million on Indiegogo to build it

Canonical has announced the first Ubuntu smartphone. Dubbed as Ubuntu Edge, the phone is a very interesting piece of device. Almost everything about the phone is something that you don’t normally see.

First, Canonical wants to raise $32 million (21.5 million pounds) on Indiegogo to build this smartphone. Yes, you read it right. The company is asking prospective consumers to put in money for it to make an Ubuntu phone and it is hoping to do it in 31 days.  At the time of writing this post, it had already raised over $160,000.

“In the car industry, Formula 1 provides a commercial testbed for cutting-edge technologies. The Ubuntu Edge project aims to do the same for the mobile phone industry — to provide a low-volume, high-technology platform, crowdfunded by enthusiasts and mobile computing professionals,” Canonical writes in Indiegogo listing.

You can put in $600 today to reserve an Ubuntu Edge unit for yourself, which will otherwise cost $830 starting tomorrow. For so much money, you will get a 4.5-inch display totting smartphone that can run on both Ubuntu Touch and Android and packs 128GB of storage, 4GB of RAM and LTE support.
