Android accounts for 75pc of worldwide smartphone sales in Q1: Gartner

smartphone-os-q1-2013-gartnerGartner has released its first quarter smartphone numbers today. As expected, Android is still leading the charge with 74.4 per cent of the worldwide smartphone sales in Q1, 2013, followed by iOS. Other smartphone OS players are still far away and don’t seem like a threat to these two leading platforms.

“There are two clear leaders in the OS market and Android’s dominance in the OS market is unshakable,” said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. “With new OSs coming to market such as Tizen, Firefox and Jolla we expect some market share to be eroded but not enough to question Android’s volume leadership.

As per the report, worldwide smartphone sales totalled 210 million units in the first quarter, up 42.9 per cent year-on-year basis. The overall mobile phone sales were 426 million units during the period.

“In the first quarter of 2013, smartphones accounted for 49.3 per cent of sales of mobile phones worldwide. This is up from 34.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2012, and 44 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2012,” Gartner noted in the press release.smartphone-vendor-q1-2013-gartner

On the vendor front, Samsung continues to rule with 30.8 per cent of the market share, followed by Apple. LG, which is at third place, has clearly shown a huge growth with its smartphone shipments up to 10 million from 4.9 million last year during Q1.
