Sony today took the wraps of its new flagship smartphones at a press event. Company is launching two new Android smartphones in the country. Part of company’s Xperia series, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL both feature full HD displays. According to Sony India, the Xperia Z will go on sale beginning March 12, followed by Xperia ZL later in the month.
The Japanese manufacturer is betting big on both the smartphone as it aims to capture a bigger pie of the Indian smartphone market. Company is losing a lot of money globally and has suffered losses in each of its last four fiscal years; however it is forecasting a return to profit in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013.
“Smartphones are one of the rare growth areas in consumer electronics. All the other areas are just maintaining or declining. That is why it is crucial for us to be successful,” Kunimasa Suzuki, the head of Sony’s mobile business, said in a recent interview to WSJ.
Coming to today’s launches, Sony Xperia Z and ZL are powered by Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor; it is the same processor, which is seen in HTC Butterfly and LG Optimus G smartphones, both of which are currently selling in the country. The smartphones also come with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which can further be expanded by a microSD card. For the imaging needs, there are a 13MP rear and 2MP front cameras in both the phones. While, the Sony Xperia Z sports glass on both front and back of the smartphone similar to Nexus 4, Xperia ZL comes with a plastic back. Xperia Z is also water and dust resistant unlike ZL, which however includes IR blaster and dedicated camera button that are not present in Xperia Z.
Sony Xperia Z and Xperia ZL phones will be sold for INR 38,990 (MRP) and INR 36,990 (MRP) respectively. The phones will get tough competition from LG Optimus G, which comes with similar features apart from the full HD display.
Both the Sony smartphones are now available for pre-order on Flipkart.
